The purpose of this course is to provide support workers with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to deliver safe, effective, and respectful stoma care. Stoma care is a high-intensity support area under the NDIS, requiring strict adherence to infection prevention procedures, accurate monitoring, and sensitive communication with participants. This course equips workers with practical strategies to manage colostomies, ileostomies, and tracheostomies, while upholding participants’ dignity, rights, and wellbeing. It ensures all staff understand their responsibilities under organizational policy, NDIS Practice Standards, and Australian health guidelines.
Define and describe the different types of stomas, including colostomy, ileostomy, and tracheostomy.
Apply infection prevention and control principles during stoma care, including the correct use of PPE and waste disposal.
Monitor stoma sites for signs of irritation, infection, or blockages, and escalate concerns appropriately.
Provide safe, person-centered care that respects the dignity, rights, and preferences of participants.
Accurately document stoma care procedures and report any issues in line with organizational policy and NDIS requirements.
Collaborate effectively with participants, families, and health professionals in the development and review of Stoma Care Plans.
